Attack on ISD

ISD = ADDIE

Main criticisms
- ISD as it is used is too slow
Current times call for the ability to change, and to do so quickly to stay ahead. The speed of the internet has made the ADDIE model archaic and slow.
- There is no destination
ISD is more focused on methods than results. People seem to get along well, often even better and faster without applying ISD principles.
- When it is followed rigidly, it produces bad solutions
Learning is far from merely scientific, so scientific-like procedures are bound to miss the mark.
- It clings to the wrong world view
Most ISD products carry the assumption that they are training idiots with no knowledge. This is never the case, and it builds resentment for training.

Article describes ISD as a scientific approach. As a purely scientific approach to a non-scientific problem, there is bound to be a disconnect if it is followed... scientifically.

I love to say that I agree with all of the claims presented in this argument. Thank heavens that our field isn't defined by the ADDIE model. I think that its time that our field loses its "science-envy" and begins to recognize that the problems we face our complex, multi-disciplinary, and beyond simple science. Learning deals with emotions, characters, individuals, attitudes, and personalities as much as it deals with methodologies, prior-knowledge, etc. We consider it an art to write a novel to help people think a certain way or accept a different perspective on a world issue. We consider it an art to pain a picture that stirs peoples emotions and causes them to dig deep in their understanding of what is depicted. How is it any less of an art to design a context and a learning environment that melds with varying emotional states, personalities and so forth? Let's get passed the ADDIE model already.
